Drinking water in schools

A reminder for schools on their responsibility to provide drinking water.

We would like to issue a reminder to both schools and local authorities on the importance of making drinking water easily available to all pupils.

It is a requirement, under Section 5 of the Healthy Eating in Schools (Wales) Measure 2009, for local authorities to ensure that drinking water is available, free of charge, on the premises of any maintained school.

The Healthy Eating in Maintained Schools statutory guidance for local authorities and governing bodies was created to support the introduction of the Measure, and contains practical information to support the delivery of healthy eating in schools.
