Welsh Government appoints new Director for School Standards

Steve Davies has been appointed as the Welsh Government’s new Director of School Standards and Workforce, Permanent Secretary Derek Jones, KCB has announced.

Steve Davies will take over from Dr. Brett Pugh who will retire as School Standards Director in January 2016.

Mr Davies has been the Managing Director of the Education Achievement Service for South East Wales since March 2012. Prior to this he was Managing Director of GleedsCocentra Ltd, an education company that has worked with more than 5,000 schools in the UK and internationally and 147 local authorities in England and Wales.

He has also taught at secondary schools in Kent and Bristol and was Chief Inspector of Schools and Director of Education in two separate London boroughs.

Owen Evans, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Education and Public Services said:

"I am pleased to announce that Steve Davies will become the Welsh Government’s next Director of School Standards.

"Steve’s appointment follows a rigorous interview process in which he competed against a strong field of candidates  I am pleased that we are able to appoint someone of Steve’s calibre and experience to this challenging and important role."

Steve Davies said:

"I am very proud to be given the opportunity to lead this critical area of work in Welsh Government at such an important time.

"I have enjoyed establishing strong professional relationships with Headteachers, governors and Local Authority Members across South East Wales in the last three years. I am looking forward to working closely with colleagues across Welsh Government, Regional School Improvement Services, local authorities and schools to secure the quality of education outcomes that our children and young people across Wales deserve and need."
