Since 2005 it has been a statutory requirement for all practitioners moving into headship in Wales to hold the NPQH.

The qualification is for those wishing to work in the maintained sector and special schools which are not maintained, who believe that they meet the current national Leadership Standards and for whom headship is a realistic next step and one that they are actively seeking.

The focus of the programme is on the required skills and attributes as articulated in the Leadership standards.

The NPQH requires candidates to:

  • complete an individual leadership review (ILR)
  • be endorsed by a headteacher or challenge advisor
  • attend an assessment centre

To complete the ILR, candidates can fill in the word document which can be downloaded from this page to evidence that they meet the leadership standards. Alternatively, there is an excel tool which provides a way for users to track their progress as they fill it in.

If you are considering applying for the NPQH then you will need to contact your Regional Educational Consortium for further information.
