The main purpose of the trial was to provide information about the technical functioning of each item and to facilitate selection of items for the finalised, standardised tests.
Evidence was sought on:
- the clarity and accessibility of test materials including texts and items
- the technical functioning of the items
- the time commitment and the manageability of the materials.
This report presents an overview of the findings of the item trial of material proposed for use in the National Reading Tests in 2013 and subsequently. A two-week trialling period was offered to schools and the trial took place 11th – 22nd June 2012.
In the light of these findings, together with feedback from teachers, administrators and expert reviewers, recommendations were made regarding item selection for the final tests.
The summary of teacher questionnaire data report presents a summary of the teacher questionnaire gathered from the item trial. NFER also used this information to refine the test items trialled and changed/omitted those that were not considered successful.
