Masters in Educational Practice: Literacy

10

Literacy failure

Introduction

This topic is closely linked to ‘Topic 8: Barriers to literacy – poverty and social factors’ and looks more closely at the consequences of failing to acquire literacy skills. It will examine the wider provision of education including those who work with excluded learners, young offenders and disengaged young people. Learners will identify patterns and trends that lead to literacy failure and use this information to evaluate and adapt their school-based practice.

Aims

  • to consider the broader view of literacy intervention
  • to consider how the design of literacy teaching can meet the needs of all literacy learners
  • to consider the choice and use of commercial intervention materials.
