Introduction

The significance of failure to acquire adequate literacy skills is an issue that is very closely linked with the current national aim of reducing the poverty gap. In this topic, there is reference to a number of key studies which show the impact of literacy failure at a personal, social and economic level. The topic will also seek to enable the teacher to identify the patterns of literacy failure and adapt professional practice to mitigate their effect.

Aims

  • to investigate the consequences of failing to acquire good literacy skills
  • to examine the wider educational framework in relation to excluded learners, young offenders and disengaged learners
  • to identify patterns and trends that can lead to literacy failure and reflect on the use of this information to adapt school practice.
