Child and adolescent development 0-19

Introduction

Development can be considered an adaptive change toward competence and involves the integration of environmental information from multiple sensory modalities that operate in parallel, with the development of one sense intimately linked to the development of another. In humans the most dramatic developmental changes occur in prenatal development, infancy and childhood. During this period a child is shaped by the circumstances in which they grow up, and by beliefs and attitudes of those who influence them.

This child development learning pack discusses the theoretical concepts underpinning typical and atypical child development and it will explore the roles of different parts of the brain in cognitive development and cognition. It will look at language and communication development from birth to 19 years of age and discuss the acquisition of literacy and numeracy skills, both of which have a fundamental role in an individual’s development and also in their adult work and social life. It will examine how social-emotional development is linked to academic success and demonstrate how scientists as well as educators can benefit from combining insights into how we develop and learn.

By the end of this learning pack, our hope is that you will have a better understanding of typical development and the implications for education, as well as some understanding that some children while component in all other respects may be unable to learn the basic skills they need to function successfully at school without appropriate support.
