Learning and teaching numeracy

This topic will focus upon effective pedagogical approaches for learners aged 3 to 19 including different methods, strategies and tools, and the assessment of numeracy.  It will include addressing the key findings of the Estyn thematic report on numeracy in Key Stages 2 and 3 (June 2013) and its report on numeracy for 14 to 19-year-olds (July 2011).

The topic will encourage practitioners to consider how they will deliver the statutory requirement of numeracy to meet all learners’ needs using the National Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF) and its accompanying resources and guidance to ensure that the teaching of numeracy skills is embedded across the curriculum across the age phases. Principles of progression and consolidation in skill development and differentiated learning and teaching will be explored. Effective learning and teaching for post-16 learners will also be examined.

Aims

  • to reflect on different pedagogical approaches to numeracy for learners aged 3 to 19 years
  • to explore ways in which practitioners can deliver the statutory requirements for numeracy via the LNF
  • to identify aspects of differentiated learning and teaching that enables progression and development of numeracy skills.
