Numeracy and inclusive practice

This topic considers barriers to mastering numeracy.

External factors, such as the social model of disability will be considered, thereby acknowledging our responsibility to provide a barrier-free learning environment for those encountering difficulty with learning numeracy. Typical and atypical numeracy development will be considered, exploring the terms delay and disorder, along with other learner factors such as the specific learning difficulty and dyscalculia.

This topic will also review the current interventions in place in schools throughout Wales.


  • to raise awareness about the concept of barriers (both external and learner factors) to mastering numeracy
  • to offer a working model for how to consider that a learner may have a specific learning difficulty in relation to numeracy
  • to provide some guidelines and resources for teaching interventions for learners with atypical development in numeracy.
