Numeracy and society

1.5

Summary

Numeracy is an essential life skill for all and this has been acknowledged throughout the history of formal education.

Learners’ numeracy skill needs are different in our current society to what have been required in the past due to technological progress. The demands of employers reflect this, so although it appears to be nothing new, the contexts and application of numeracy skills require a more effective and accountable process.

There have been many adjustments to the learning and teaching of numeracy over the past few decades but in 2013 there has been the introduction of the first statutory National Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF) and National Numeracy Tests.
