This topic will build upon the historical and contextual information provided in Topic 1, ‘Numeracy and society’, and explore definitions of numeracy and its relationship to mathematics, the wider curriculum and ‘real-life’ learner contexts. It will prompt you to consider the term ‘numeracy-in-action’ and what ‘being numerate’ might look like for learners within these different, but interconnected contexts. It will encourage you to reflect upon the skills, concepts and principles needed in later life outside a purely mathematical context in relation to the National Numeracy Programme (NNP).
- to explore what is meant and understood by the term 'numeracy'
- to identify factors that affect the acquisition of numeracy skills
- to reflect on the role of the NNP and the numeracy component of the National Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF).
