Collecting and recording data on pupils' first language

For the first time this January the Welsh Government will start to collect information on the first language of all compulsory school aged pupils in all maintained schools through the Pupil Level Annual Schools' Census (PLASC).

Local authorities and schools were encouraged to prepare for its introduction by collecting this data on a voluntary basis during academic year 2010/2011 although it did not become a mandatory data field within PLASC until academic year 2011/12.
